The Maker Mask Respirator has been approved by the NIH for all general community applications: This approval applies for use outside of the direct healthcare setting and benefits critical front-line essential service providers including: Police/Law Enforcement, Fire and Rescue and other Emergency Response service providers. The Maker Mask is also a great option for essential service resources providing our communities with food and other needed supplies: Grocery, Delivery, Transportation and other supporting services.
Please note that the Rapid Response to Covid-19 Using 3D Printing inter-agency partnership has given the Maker Mask their highest approval for non-commercial grade masks. They have also noted that no 3D printed masks, or other solutions, using PLA materials in construction (3D printing filament) have been tested to assess the off-gassing limits of the material or its corresponding health effects. It is important to note that NASA has already found that PLA is both “Environmentally friendly” and “Does not release toxic fumes/safe for people”, as detailed in their 2016 report: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20160010284.
